The My Centre in Nerang is set to start expansion and a major overhaul. All they are waiting on is the final approval from council.
In as little, or as long, as six months locals could be experiencing the construction side of a shopping mall expansion. The expansion will see the centre become a little more than 5 and a half times it’s current size.
That will be a much larger 63,887 sq m on completion.
The appeals period that final approval relies on ends on Monday coming. Cr Shepherd says no appeals have been received as yet.
Independent studies have been performed for council to asses for any foreseeable economic risks to surrounding business and none have been found.
The expansion would also include extra car parks, a pedestrian bikeway link and a 200m stretch of public open space along the Nerang river. It will be done in two stages to reduce inconvenience on tenants and customers and see to the preservation of the existing centre.
A spokeswoman for Ehab Abdou, the Melbounre based owner, said that there may be future development approvals made for a marina for those who arrive in watercraft.
The expansion of the centre will see hundreds of jobs created for the area and a boost to its economy.
